Lapsang Souchong Chinese Black Tea
A legendary Chinese black tea smoke-dried over pine wood, delivering bold campfire aroma and a smooth, rounded body.
Overview
Lapsang Souchong is one of the most distinctive black teas in the world. Smoke-dried over pine wood fires, this tea offers a powerful aroma and flavor reminiscent of campfires, smoked wood, and rustic warmth.
Despite its bold smokiness, the cup remains smooth and rounded, with a golden liquor and satisfying body.
How Lapsang Souchong Is Made
This tea is traditionally dried over pine-wood fires, allowing the leaves to absorb the smoke naturally. This unique process is what gives Lapsang Souchong its unmistakable aroma and flavor.
The technique has been preserved for generations and remains a hallmark of traditional Chinese black tea craftsmanship.
History & Legend
According to legend, Lapsang Souchong was discovered by accident when soldiers camped inside a tea farmer’s drying barn. The tea absorbed smoke from the campfires, creating a bold new style.
Rather than discard the tea, the farmer sold it—unknowingly introducing one of the most iconic teas in history. A later variation, softened with bergamot, eventually inspired what we now know as Earl Grey.
